Sick and stressed

All of us!  Well, Billy and I aren’t sick, but stressed :)   As my Daddy says, “we’re too blessed to be stressed” :)   Anyway, last night was interesting.  We didn’t have a crate large enough to house Mesa, so, we slept in the living room with her.  She thrashed all night and woke several times stressed (panting heavily).  She also threw up her food and pills!  We were unsure of what to do, but it all worked out.  We took her in to therepy this morning and were able to talk to Dr. Hettlich who was not alarmed at all.  In fact, she was very encouraged and encouraging!  Therepy went well, Mesa placed her right leg every time in the water!  She will benefit greatly from therepy.  The tech had to get in the water with her.  That’s funny, if you know Mesa, she was probably thinking…”ha, ha…look at her, I made her get in here with me :) ”  Sometimes we wonder what she’s thinking!  Nevertheless, she did great today.  Pray for us tonight.  We got her a crate (which PetSmart told us to return it when we were done…really, I would never do this, but they insisted.)  Also got a boot for her right leg (at Gander Mountain, they divided a package only selling us one boot for $5.00, again, another financial blessing!)  So, please visit these stores…very customer oriented.  But pray for us tonight.  Thanks

‘…and I will show you great and mighty things’

Well, we called on Him and He answered!  When we went to see Mesa on today, Dr. Hettlich had the discharge papers in hand and was ready to send Mesa home! (We weren’t ready with her bedding yet, but that was ok.) On our way out to the truck Mesa was placing her right leg on her paw.  Dr. Hettlich was thrilled.  We told her that she had challenged us to pray for that specifically…and her exact words were, “That’s Crazy!” She was very excited as were we.  We need to bring her back tomorrow for Physical Therepy (for the next several weeks) where she’ll do water therepy and other exercises to strengthen her back and legs.  Can’t wait to give you another update.  God is working.  Please continue to pray.

Please pray for Mesa’s Right leg!

Please read the following post “Rebuked” for details, but we would like for the Lord to reveal Himself through this next miracle!

Rebuked!

2009-026Another day, another great report, but today we were rebuked.  Not just me, not just Billy….ALL OF US!  Dr. Hettlich wasn’t supposed to be at the hospital today, but out she walked with Mesa.  I guess she didn’t walk out, she sortof floated out….MESA USED THE BATHROOM THIS MORNING!  She did both, in case you’re wondering…all by herself.  That isn’t common and wasn’t expected the first week of the surgery (as with many other things).  We went  walking with Mesa outside with Dr. Hettlich. Pointing to Mesa’s left leg, she said “that is a miracle, we didn’t expect that at all this week”…then she said something VERY rebuking while pointing to the right leg “I’m afraid you didn’t pray for that leg as much”.  Of course, she was extremely respectful to us, but she was exactly right!  We are asking each of you to pray for Mesa’s right leg tonight and Sunday that it will be as great as her left, if not better by MONDAY!  Another great report is that we will talk seriously on Monday about taking her home!  We are already praying about what to do as she will need extensive rehab that will cost approx $300 a week (for her to keep excelling the way she already is).  Please pray for that with us too.

Daily Miracles

2009-032It has amazed Dr. Hettlich at what Mesa is doing.  She has even said that this has been a miracle.  Today Mesa is weight bearing on her left leg.   When we visited today, they brought Mesa out to see us and again she wagged her tail, but even more exciting is that they passed her off to us and told us to ‘disappear’ and take her for a walk.  We took her across the street to a grassy area and sat down with her to spend some time together.  We took a short nap (well, Mesa slept about an hour), but we heard her talk to ‘Fun Guy’ on the phone!  ‘Fun Guy’ is my Daddy.  When he called we put the phone up to Mesa’s ear and he talked to her….she wailed out and looked for him as much as she could.  It was the sweetest noise to hear her long to see him.  (It’s how I’ve felt through this whole process!)  We also were able to get Mesa to drink some water.  Very important for bathroom going!  Please keep praying about her right leg and that she’ll relieve herself (by herself).

His Grace is Sufficient

2009-030Last night my dear friends Jenny Shoultz  and Megan Gruber drove from Menomonee Falls to be with us during this time.  It’s hard for words to describe the moment I found out they were coming down.  It was unbelievable.  The whole week was beginning to get foggier, but I know the Lord sent them just for me.  I kept busy through the early morning waiting for a phone call from the Veterinarian student (Casey), but the call never came.  At times, I thought the worst, but keeping my thoughts focused elsewhere was a huge help.  No call so far has meant bad news, so, I was really praying hard and keeping focused on His Grace being sufficient! We were scheduled for a visit at 3:00 pm.  We decided to take Jenny, Megan, Simeon and Sophia (2 of Jenny’s children) with us to see Mesa (not really knowing what to expect.)  But we thought if they could look through the fence at Mesa that would be a blessing.  The surprise was, that they were going to actually get to pet her and spend time with her with us!  What a sweet time this was as the Surgeon came out thrilled with Mesa’s progress!  Actually, she said it was a 100% improvement from the prior day.  She spent about 2-3 hours with us explaining things to Mesa’s visitors.  Mesa wagged her tail when she saw Billy and I (for the first time that they had seen).  That was thrilling as it now meant that she had movement in her right leg.  Of course, still not bearing weight, but movement!  Praise the Lord, again.

Praise the Lord for friends!

We are so thankful for all of you praying for us and Mesa during this time.  Through the course of the day Monday and Tuesday we have been so scatterbrained at times and we thank you for helping us through the long hours of the day.  I had wanted several times to pick up the phone and call many of you, but I just couldn’t.   So, we thank each of you for all that you have and are doing during this time!  Praise the Lord for each of you.

Surgery Update

The Surgeon was beyond excited.  Yesterday morning, when we were bathing the day in prayer, they laid Mesa on the CT scan table under heavy sedation through anesthesia and when they laid her down, the Lord allowed Mesa’s spine and muscles to follow His control and they alligned themselves.  The techinicians were in awe as they watched this little puppy relax and saw something they’ve virtually never seen before.  Had the Lord not done this, the surgery to follow would have been excruciating.  They would have had to scrape bone, cut muscle and brace Mesa’s spine in such a way that her recovery would be either impossible or very long and drawn out.  As a result of the Lord working, they only needed to put pins in one side of Mesa’s vertebrae (using only 6 pins versus 12), they only had to put bone cement on the one side (which improves mobility and limits bladder control), they had enough muscle to pull up over the spine to impove her structure and they did NOT have to pull the spine into place as it had already done that!  All of these major things are direct results of praying!  A couple of times the surgeon used the word Miracle.  We told her several times of the things we prayed for, she was a little stand-offish, but for the most part was receptive.  Still, they gave no recovery ‘hope’.  We were to still wait (and pray) and only time would give the outcome.

ICU

Yes, they have an Intensive Care Unit for dogs.  They wanted us to feed her when we arrived, but more than that the buzz was…..that Mesa had been taken outside already!  You heard it right….she had such a great report this morning that the surgeon felt like they could harness her up and take her out.  The bigger buzz was…..that we were going to get to take her out with them for the 2nd time that day.  The surgeons exact words were….”This is a miracle”.  Oh, and don’t you know that we were rejoicing in the Lord!  Mesa licked the food (baby food, no less) off my finger (which grosses me out, but at this point, she’s sick so she needed to eat!).  Then they put a sling around her back end and let her front legs do the work walk/trotting out the door.  They weren’t going slow at all, they were hoofing it (or should I say ‘pawing’ it?)  But still NOTHING in the right hind leg.  We are still not out of the woods yet….she still may not ever walk again.  She was dragging her toes on the left and nothing on the right.  She still may not ever have bladder control.  So, please still pray.  There is MUCH to pray about.  I’ll give a surgery update in the next post.

We can visit tomorrow

They did not let us go to the hospital today.  So, it was hard to wait from so far away, but it was the best.  The Lord has been teaching us so much and we are very thankful.  We will fill you in more tomorrow.  At this point, please pray for Mesa through the night.
